Questions Parents Frequently Ask about Children and Chiropractic Care
Why do children need chiropractic?
Chiropractic can be beneficial for children of all ages. The birthing process is one of the most traumatic events in our lives. Birth can place extra stress on the still developing spine. The resulting irritation to the nervous system can be the cause of many new-born health complaints. For example: Colic (unexplained crying), poor appetite, breathing problems, and allergic reactions can often be traced to nervous system dysfunction caused by a subluxated spine. As babies learn to walk they fall, this may not seem like a damaging thing, however, if this is neglected during a period of rapid growth it could lead to serious spinal deformities later in life. This can set the stage for scoliosis, "growing pains", and a weakened immune system. As children began to play sports and go to school their bodies are being beaten down by basketball practice or lugging a 40 pound backpack around. Typically, children do not complain about back pain or headaches however this does not mean they don't have a subluxation.
When should children be examined?
Children should be examined right after birth because of potential damages during the birthing process. Even the most natural births can be traumatic to the infant and can have "hidden damage". Studies show that many children who experience symptoms of colic, ear-infections and asthma have spinal subluxations impairing their nervous system function. Early detection and correction can prevent layers of damage from occurring in the child's vital nervous system. Accumulated damage will have lifelong consequences. Many spinal problems seen in adults begin in childhood. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.
Does it Hurt?
Dr. Sweet specializes in adjustments for children. He has personally developed gentle techniques to care for children. Dr. Sweet modifies his techniques to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal problems. Does Dr. Sweet Recommend Children Get Adjusted?
Absolutely! Dr. Sweet recommends all children be examined to determine if there is a subluxation. When Dr. Sweet's children were young they were adjusted and examined regularly. As adults all 5 of them continue to receive regular chiropractic care. The youngest child Dr. Sweet ever adjusted was his second youngest, she was 45 minutes old. Now a college graduate, she never missed a day of school due to illness.
